The East End Concerned Citizens in conjunction with the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Uniontown, Uniontown Weed and Seed, Mayor Fike and the Uniontown Police and Fire Departments, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Revamped Youth Group held National Night Out at the corner of Coolspring Street and Collins Avenue on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. Event planner and East End Concerned Citizens member Gina Jones commented that "This is the third time we have celebrated National Night Out in the East End. It is an ideal way to get people to know their neighbors and to also meet the public servants who protect us."
The event featured great food, games and face painting for kids, a tour of a Uniontown fire truck and a K9 dog demonstration by Uniontown's K9 unit Officer Michael Garrow and his dog Leo. Ms. Pat Henderson a member of the East End Concerned Citizens stated that "Everyone, especially the children, enjoyed the K9 demonstration and all the other activities".
2010 was the 27th year that National Night Out, a nationwide program, was celebrated. As stated on the National Nigh Out web site, the event, typically held on the first Tuesday in August, is designed to:
Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness:
Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs:
Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 36 million people participated in National Night Out 2009. (Source: National Night Out web site).
