Safe, Clean and Green
If a community is not safe and clean, or perceived to be safe and clean, it will be difficult if not impossible to attract and retain residents:
- In the spring of 2008, the group held a neighborhood clean-up, filling four 30-yard dumpsters.
- GACCA has been able to access grant funding (Federal Enterprise Community) for the police department to pay for extra Gallatin Avenue neighborhood patrols as well as to purchase equipment.
- Residents anonymously submit tip sheets at the Association's monthly meetings informing the police and code enforcement about any problems that they have in their neighborhood including possible drug activity, unlicensed junk cars, disturbing of the peace, etc.
- The group has periodically held crime watch walks through the neighborhood.
- GACCA and RACU are working to develop a tot lot on Lemon Street in the heart of the Gallatin Avenue neighborhood. The RACU recently purchased the some of the property for the project.
- RACU and GACCA have been encouraging residents to adopt-a-lot where dilapidated homes have been demolished.
- As a result of its participation in the introductory leadership training from STEPS to a Healthier Fayette, GACCA has been awarded a $2,000 grant to hold a series of health fairs in the Gallatin Avenue neighborhood focused on proper nutrition, diet and exercise. The first event was held in conjunction with GACCA's "Cars, Crafts and Kids" festival on September 24, 2008.
